Budget boat maintenance

Please note: the application period for this course has now ended, and no new applications will be considered.

Following the success of our 2011 Learner Workshop Skills to Sea, we are pleased to have received support from the Lifelong Learning Programme to offer a new Learner Workshop in 2012:

Budget Boat Maintenance – skills and knowledge for essential boat maintenance

Dates: Thursday 8th March – Sunday 18th March 2012, Brighton, UK

The workshop is completely free for participants - all transport, accommodation and food costs are covered by the funding.

Main activities

repairsThe Workshop will have a daily theme, with each theme being introduced by an expert who will go through some basic concepts and then show learners some practical techniques. At least half of each day will involve hands on practice. The themes to be covered are:

-Hull design, manufacture and maintenance
-Engines and fuel systems
-Sail care and repair
-Electrical systems, including wind, solar and tidal generators
-Storing and growing food on board a boat
-Low-cost navigational equipment, do-it-yourself projects to set up budget navigational systems
-Safety overview.

The Workshop language is english, unfortunately we are unable to offer translation.
Your english, therefore, must be of a sufficient standard to benefit from the course.

Expected outputs

Learners will be supported to write an individual learning plan so they can make the most out of the learning activities offered during the Workshop. From the Workshop we expect people to learn the basics of boat maintenance; gain increased confidence to carry out basic boat maintenance tasks; to develop new skills, knowledge and experiences; everyone will make contacts beyond their resident country which can be pursued in the future; an opportunity to improve European language skills; be introduced to eco-friendly boat maintenance and the marine impacts of maintaining a boat
