Here’s a few photos from this weekend’s RYA Competent Crew and RYA Day Skipper courses. The five days started without much wind, but we left Chichester with a fair tide up to Cowes and a visit to the River Medina. Day two saw us try out some slow motion sailing manouevres in the central Solent, with the wind picking up enough for us to short tack up the Beaulieu River to Buckler’s Hard. Day three saw Day Skipper candidate Gustavo skipper us to Poole. A slow downwind sail down the western Solent turned into close haul tacking through the Needles channel and eventually a motor across to Poole harbour. A quick visit to Poole Town Quay for supplies while the sun set, allowing us some night pilotage and a mooring buoy off Sandbanks for the evening. The wind arrived on day four, and with Phil as skipper we sailed off the buoy and out of Poole harbour with about a hundred other boats and set sail for St Catherine’s point on the south coast of the Isle of Wight and all the way round, sailing right up to the entrance of Portsmouth harbour. The final day was a short beat back to Chichester, with winds gusting high force 6.
